"The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death." Proverbs 14:27 NASB
How many books have been written with the theme LIFE? I just did a google search with that one word: Life 6,850,000,000 results.
The self-help industry thrives on this incessant desire for life. The desire to be healthy in both body and spirit, eat more spinach and walk on treadmills. The articles on cut out sugar and cut out fat, don't eat eggs... And then there are the articles that tell you to eat fat, eat eggs, eat chocolate.
Does anyone really know anything about anything?
We are looking for something when we make these investments in our time, money, and continual thought. What is it?
What are we looking for from these acts of 'healthy living'?
We are looking for longer life. We want to live forever. It is almost laughable the way we try to detour the inevitable.
Mark Twain once said:
"Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the
age of 80 and gradually approach 18." (Mark Twain)
Mark Twain did not complicate the issue or the thought by throwing in the death aspect.
We will all die. We are not escaping it. It will happen to every single one of us. And the crazy part is, none of us knows when death will decide to come a calling. Some people live like monks and die early, some like hellions and die in their 90's. We cannot know when the Grim Reaper walks across our threshold.
I advocate staying healthy, eating healthy, and exercising. I have some health issues and look like I don't do anything but eat all day long, but I don't. I try to walk as much as possible and even have a job as a dog walker. But, I know that I will die. I have looked forward to that day in many ways. I'm ready to meet my Maker, when He is ready to take me home.
But until then, I'm up for life and I want to live it in an abundant way. I am pretty much up for a fountain of life pouring down on my head every day. I would love to feel fresh and alive and up for a new adventure even at my now 60 years and further into my 90s.
I am more afraid of death while I am still living than of death when I die. And I think that is the majority of people that are dieting, exercising, and OMmmmmmm-ing.
For, death doesn't come only after we stop breathing, or our brain stops sending.
Death in life can happen in many ways. Alcoholism, is a form of death. Abuse is one as well. Addictions of any kind whether physical or mental are sly-murderers of our days in and days out joy, energy, and relationships. These, to me, are the snares of death.
This verse describing a way to find a fountain of life is a worthy goal. But finding a way to avoid the snares of death ⏤ now that is something I want to investigate for my future path.
And God gives us a very clear and direct Wisdom Passage to direct our path in this.
This is not a "What does God mean by that?" verse.
This is a black and white, clear, distinct, direct "follow the yellow brick road" verse. It is even more clear than that, because there will never be a 'Y' in this yellow brick road.
"The Fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death."
You can't get much more clear than that. And how do we fear the LORD? My personal perspective narrows it down to two verses.
Luke 10:27 helps clarify how we fear the LORD.
When Jesus was asked how to inherit eternal life, he responded:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your strength and with all your mind. And love your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10:27 NIV
Revelations 4:11 pretty much completes the picture:
"Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created." Rev.4:11 NASB
It might be a pretty simplistic way to look at Fear of the LORD, but these are the two verses I hold onto when I began to question, "Am I fearing the LORD properly?"
And I check myself often.
I want to fear well. And when I find verses that help me do that, I want to share them. Because I want you to fear the LORD well also.
Do you have a point in time that you have determined to follow a path that God has directed you down very clearly? Please share in the comments. We all benefit from those testimonies of God's goodness and guidance.
