The Fear of the Lord

1.

Today's Passage: Psalms 112

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

1. Praise the Lord!
How joyful are those who fear the Lord
and delight in obeying his commands.
2. Their children will be successful everywhere;
an entire generation of godly people will be blessed.
3. They themselves will be wealthy,
and their good deeds will last forever.
4. Light shines in the darkness for the godly.
They are generous, compassionate, and righteous.
5. Good comes to those who lend money generously
and conduct their business fairly.
6. Such people will not be overcome be evil.
Those who are righteous will be long remembered.
7. They do not fear bad news;
they confidently trust the Lord to care for them.
8. They are confident and fearless
and can face their foes triumphantly.
9. They share freely and give generously to those in need.
Their good deeds will be remembered forever.
They will have influence and honor.
10. The wicked will see this and be infuriated.
They will grind their teeth in anger;
they will slink away, their hopes thwarted.
Psalm 112 NLT

2.

We are so confused about the Fear of the Lord.
And yet, God tells us to fear Him.
And fearing Him will bring a blessing.
Now the word fear has many meanings.
That topic is for a bible lesson, not for meditation strategies.
Take this passage apart piece by piece.
There are so many wonderful nuggets in this passage.
It is almost too much to contain in our hearts and minds.

I encourage you to use Lectio Devina for this passage:

  • Ask God to open your heart and mind to what is written in the passage.
  • Read the passage
  • Re-read the passage looking for 3 words or phrases that really resonate in your heart.
  • Write those words down.
  • Re-read the passage. Of the 3 words which 1 resonates most in your heart?
    • Ask yourself what does this word mean in my life?
    • Where do I need change/growth/revelation?
  • Write this word down. Or, remember this word throughout your day.
  • Ask God to show you meaning from the passage.
  • We read, reflect, and communicate. Share with the community.
3.

Please Lord allow us to lean into the wonder of who you are.
Allow us to fear you in healthy fear.
Allow us to know that in fearing you well, we have no other fear to concern ourselves with.
Allow us to grow in you.
Allow us to be your women and men.
Allow us to be salt and light in this world.
Bless us as we learn how to fear you well.
In your precious name I pray
Amen

not be overcome be evil

I want to hold on to this truth.
When I fear the LORD, I will not be overcome by evil.

Doesn't mean it won't come knocking on my door.
It is just not allowed in to sit and have a coffee.

Evil cannot cause me to cower in the foyer waiting for it to bash my life in some vulgar way.
