Witnesses against Guilty Israel

1.

Today's Passage: Amos 3:1-15

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

(An Aside:
Amos, an older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, around 750BC.
Amos is the first biblical prophetic book written.)

1. Listen to this message that the LORD has spoken against you,
O people of Israel and Judah⏤against the entire family I rescued from Egypt.
2."From among all the families on the earth,
I have been intimate with you alone.
That is why I must punish you for all your sins."

3. Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?
4. Does a lion ever roar in a thicket without first finding a victim?
Does a young lion growl in its den without first catching its prey?
5. Does a bird ever get caught in a trap that has no bait?
Does a trap spring shut when there's nothing to catch?
6. When the ram's horn blows a warning, shouldn't the people be alarmed?
Does disaster come to a city unless the LORD has planned it?

7. Indeed, the Sovereign LORD never does anything until he reveals his plans
to his servants and prophets.

8. The lion has roared ⏤so who isn't frightened?
The Sovereign LORD has spoken ⏤
so who can refuse to proclaim his message?
9, Announce this to the leaders of Philistia
and to the great ones of Egypt;
"Take your seats now on the hills around Samaria,
and witness the chaos and oppression in Israel."

10. "My people have forgotten how to do right," says the LORD.
"Their fortresses are filled with wealth taken by theft and violence.
11. Therefore," says the Sovereign LORD, "an enemy is coming!
He will surround them and shatter their defenses.
Then he will plunder all their fortresses."

12. This is what the LORD says:

"A shepherd who tries to rescue a sheep from a lion's mouth
will recover only two legs or a piece of an ear.
So it will be for the Israelites in Samaria lying on luxurious beds,
and for the people of Damascus reclining on couches.

13. "Now listen to this and announce it throughout all Israel,"
says the LORD, the LORD GOD of Heaven's Armies.

14. "On the very day I punish Israel for its sins,
I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel.
The horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground
15. And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy⏤
their winter mansion and their summer houses, too⏤
All their places filled with ivory." says the LORD.
Amos 3:1-15 NLT

14th strategy.
Instructions Given

  • Prepare your heart
  • Ask Jesus to bring you into the very presence of God Himself as you read instructions
  • Imagine God or Jesus handing these instructions.
  • Who are the instructions given to? a group, a nation, a particular person?
  • Why is He giving these instructions?
  • Is there a consequence from these instructions either good or bad?
  • Contemplate these instructions.
  • List them either mentally or write them down.
  • What do they mean? What do they represent?
  • Are these instructions wise for anyone anytime to follow?
  • Would they help your own life, if applied?
  • Pray over what God has given.
  • Thank Him for His guidance either in the past, or presently.

3.

Thank you LORD for these warnings from Amos.
Thank you for reminding us that putting any idol before you will lead to destruction.
We desire to learn from Israel's mistakes.
We desire to learn from our own.
Prepare our hearts today to be present with You.
Prepare our day to see Your hand and hear Your voice.
In your name we pray
Jehoshua
Amen.

4.

Please leave your name and your last initial in the comments below.
We are here to glorify God.
Thank you for being here.

And I'll be back here again tomorrow.
I hope that you will be too. :)

What a hard passage - again - I say HARD.
And yet, this is the words of the LORD to his own children, his own family.
They are not measuring up to the bar that He has set.
Hard, Hard, Hard stuff.

And yet, Amos is known to have a commitment of telling the prophesies. And from what we understand he is the first to begin giving these prophesies. I guess he was trying hard to get their attention.

He certainly has mine!
I don't want what he is prophesying to happen to me our my loved one, to me or my neighbors. I wonder how the Israelites could be so contrary to listening.

But do I?
Do I really take warning for the walk I am taking - when I go off on a tangent that does not glorify God or edify anyone?
