 579.

The Futility of Labor

1.

Today's Passage: Ecclesiastes 2:18-26

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

3.

8th strategy.
Choose three important verses that speak to you today.

  • Begin by getting your heart ready to receive the words that God has laid down for us on this page. Ask Him to give you what you need to hear. Ask Him to give you the mind of Christ to be able to remember this strategy and continue it throughout the day.
  • Read the passage completely.
  • After reading the first time go back and chose the three most important verses that speak to you today.
  • Ask God to bring those verses back to you through out the day.
  • Find out if by the end of the day only one verse has been thought about more than the others.
  • Thank God for that verse.
  • This is a good strategy to use for long passages.
  • Be sure to stop and thank God for being here with you today.

18. I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.
19. And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless!
20. So I gave up in despair, questioning the value of all my hard work in this world.

21. Some people work wisely with knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts to someone who hasn't worked for it. This, too, is meaningless, a great tragedy.
22. So what do people get in  this life for all their hard work and anxiety?
23. Their days of labor are filled with pain and grief; even at night their minds cannot rest. It is all meaningless.

24. So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God.
25. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?
26. God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to those who please him. But if a sinner becomes wealthy, God takes the wealth away and gives it to those who please him. This, too, is meaningless ⏤ like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 2:18-26 NLT

Living in the world is not easy. I am constantly pulled to be more than. When in actuality I am only me and it is only God that does anything good through me. But, If I do not co-operate with Him, nothing I do or don't do is good.

So I can be hard-working, I can be lazy. But profit only comes from entering into a deep relationship with Christ, cooperating with Him in the daily life and battling all of the world away in my head. It is in this endeavor that God will provide peace and assurance. It is in this endeavor that God is glorified.

If I think I have anything to do with life and my goodness or success - that is when I fall back into a desire to worldly control my outcome.

Hardest part of life is producing a moment by moment response to His leading and entering into the world WITH Him to dance and celebrate.
