God's Children

1.

Today's Passage: Galatians 3:23-29

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

23. Before the way of faith in Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed.

24. Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith.
25. And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.

26. For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
28. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's promise to Abraham belongs to you.
Galatians 3:23-29 NLT

3.

8th strategy.
Choose three important verses that speak to you today.

  • Begin by getting your heart ready to receive the words that God has laid down for us on this page. Ask Him to give you what you need to hear. Ask Him to give you the mind of Christ to be able to remember this strategy and continue it throughout the day.
  • Read the passage completely.
  • After reading the first time go back and chose the three most important verses that speak to you today.
  • Ask God to bring those verses back to you through out the day.
  • Find out if by the end of the day only one verse has been thought about more than the others.
  • Thank God for that verse.
  • This is a good strategy to use for long passages.
  • Be sure to stop and thank God for being here with you today.

The Law and God's Promise

15. Dear brothers and sisters, here's an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case.
16. God gave the promises to Abraham and his child. And notice that the Scripture doesn't say "to his children," as if it meant many descendants. Rather it says "to his child" ⏤ and that, of course, means Christ.
17. This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise.
18. For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God's promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise.

19. Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people.
20. Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not us a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham.

21. Is there a conflict, then, between God's law and God's promises! Absolutely not! If the law could give us new life, we could be made right with God by obeying it.
22. But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God's promise of  freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ.
Galatians 3:15-22 NLT

Faith Brings Righteousness

1.

Today's Passage: Galatians 3:1-14

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

1. Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ's death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross.
2. Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ.
3. How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?
4. Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it?

5. I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not it is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.

6. In the same way, "Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith."
7. The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.

8. What's more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would declare the Gentiles to be righteous because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, "All nations will be blessed through you."
9. So all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith.

10. But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, "Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God's Book of the Law."
11. So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life."
12. This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, "It is through obeying the law that a person has life."

13. But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrong doing. For it is written in the Scriptures, "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
14. Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.
Galatians 3:1-14 NLT

3.

1st strategy from the ancients -
Lectio Divina

  • Ask God to open your heart and mind to what is written in the passage.
  • Read the passage
  • Re-read the passage looking for 3 words or phrases that really resonate in your heart.
  • Write those words down.
  • Re-read the passage. Of the 3 words which 1 resonates most in your heart?
    • Ask yourself what does this word mean in my life?
    • Where do I need change/growth/revelation?
  • Write this word down. Or, remember this word throughout your day.
  • Ask God to show you meaning from the passage.
  • We read, reflect, and communicate. Share with the community.
  • Don't forget to thank God for being with you during this endeavor to find intimacy with Him.

16. Some time later two prostitutes came to the king to have an argument settled.
17. "Please, my lord," one of them began, "this woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth to a baby while she was with me in the house.
18. Three days later this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there were only two of us in the house.

19. "But her baby died during the night when she rolled over on it.
20. Then she got up in the night and took my son from beside me while I was asleep. She laid her dead child in my arms and took mine to sleep beside her.
21. And in the morning when I tried to nurse my son, he was dead! But when I looked more closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn't my son at all."

22. Then the other woman interrupted, "It certainly was your son, and the living child is mine."

"No," the first woman said, "the living child is mine, and the dead one is yours." And so they argued back and forth before the king.

23. Then the king said, "Let's get the facts straight. Both of you claim the living child is yours, and each says that the dead one belongs to the other.
24. All right, bring me a sword." So a sword was brought to he king.

25. Then he said, "Cut the living child in two, and give half to one woman and half to the other!"

26. Then the woman who was the real mother of the living child, and who loved him very much, cried out, "Oh no, my lord! Give her the child ⏤ please do not kill him!"

But the other woman said, "All right, he will neither be yours nor mine; divide him between us!"

27. Then the king said, "Do not kill the child, but give him to the woman who wants him to live, for she is his mother!"

28. When all Israel heard the king's decision, the people were in awe of the king, for they saw the wisdom God had given him for rendering justice.
1 Kings 3:16-28 NLT

3.

5th strategy.
A simple strategy: Building Blocks

  • Begin by asking God to join you in building into your heart what He would want you to build.
  • Read the passage completely
  • Read the passage again. With the second reading pause after each phrase and think about the phrase. Take the phrase in slowly.
  • You might want to reread the phrase until the meaning, or importance of the phrase really sinks in.
  • After reading each phrase at least once, sometimes more. Go back and reread the entire passage.
  • Do you find that the passage builds phrase upon phrase in importance? Why? or Why not?
  • What phrase do you find most important in the passage?
  • Thank God for this phrase and commit it to memory today.
  • Don't forget to thank God for being here today with you.

Solomon Asks for Wisdom

1.

Today's Passage: 1 Kings 3:1-15

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

1. Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and married one of his daughters. He brought her to live in the City of David until he could finish building his palace and the Temple of the LORD and the wall around the city.
2. At that time the people of Israel sacrificed their offerings at local places of worship, for a temple honoring the name of the LORD had not yet been built.

3. Solomon loved the LORD and followed all the decrees of his father, David, except that Solomon, too, offered sacrifices and burned incense at the local places of worship.
4. The most important of these places of worship was at Gibeon, so the king went there and sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings.
5. That night the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, "What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!"

6. Solomon replied, "You showed faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued your faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne.

7. "Now, O LORD my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn't know his way around.
8. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted!
9. Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?"

10. The LORD was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom.
11. So God replied, "Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies ⏤
12. I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!
13. And I will also give you what you did not ask for ⏤ riches and fame! No other kind in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life!
14. And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life."

15. Then Solomon woke up and realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the LORD'S Covenant, where he sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he invited all his officials to a great banquet.
1 Kings 3:1-15 NLT

3.

23rd Strategy.
God uses characters and jobs to prepare our hearts for truth.

  • Ask God to open your heart.
  • Thank God for writing this story to teach you.
  • Ask him to help you hear what He wants you to learn.
  • Think about the story line (plot).
  • Are there details being explained? Names being used?
  • Take a moment to think about the activity in the story.
  • Why is God revealing these details? Are they helpful?
  • Thank God for questions to ask yourself.
  • Thank God for answers when they come.

Shimei Condemned

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

A reminder 1 Kings 2:13-33 read April 28, 2017:

[Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, was asked by Adonijah to make a request to Solomon for the hand of Abishag in marriage, the girl from Shunem. This request resulted in the death of Adonijah (Solomon's brother that had tried to take over the throne), Abiather (the priest who had helped him) was sent back to his home in Anathoth, and deposed him as priest (fulfilling the prophecy concerning Eli the priest's descendants) and Joab heard about all of this and ran to the sacred tent and grabbed the horns refusing to let go except under death. All of this happened because of Adonijah's rebellion.]
We pick the story up here:

34. So Benaiah son of Jehoiada returned to the sacred tent and killed Joab, and he was buried at his home in the wilderness.
35. Then the king appointed Benaiah to command the army in place of Joab, and he installed Zadok the priest to take the place of Abiathar.

36. The king then sent for Shimei and told him, "Build a house here in Jerusalem and live there. But don't step outside the city to go anywhere else.
37. On the day you so much as cross the Kidron Valley, you will surely die; and your blood will be on your own head."

38. Shimei replied, "Your sentence is fair; I will do whatever my lord the king commands," So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.

39. But three years later two of Shimei's slaves ran away to King Achish son of Maacah of Gath. When Shimei learned where they were,
40. he saddled his donkey and went to Gath to search for them. When he found them, he brought them back to Jerusalem.

41. Solomon heard that Shimei had left Jerusalem and had gone to Gath and returned.
42. So the king sent for Shimei and demanded, "Didn't I make you swear by the LORD and warn you not to go anywhere else or you would surely die? And you replied, 'The sentence is fair; I will do as you say.'
43. Then why haven't you kept your oath to the LORD and obeyed my command?"

44. The king also said to Shimei, "You certainly remember all the wicked things you did to my father, David. May the LORD now bring that evil on your own head.
45. But may I, King Solomon, receive the LORD'S blessings , and may one of David's descendants always sit on this throne in the presence of the LORD."
46. Then, at the king's command, Benaiah son of Jehoiada took Shimei outside and killed him.

So the kingdom was now firmly in Solomon's grip.
2 Kings 2:34-46

3.

22nd Strategy.
God uses story to prepare our hearts for truth.

  • Ask him to help you hear what He wants you to learn.
  • Think about the story line (plot).
  • Who is involved?
  • Is there conflict in the verse? chapter? book?
  • What is the conflict and how is it being resolved?
  • Have you gone through a similar situation?
  • How is God moving you to respond?
  • Thank God for questions to ask yourself.
  • Thank God for answers when they come.

The Census of Israel's Warriors (1)

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

1. A year after Israel's departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said,
2. "From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men
3. twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,
4. and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe.

5. "These are the tribes and the names of the leaders who will assist you:
Tribe Leader
Reuben--------------------------------------Elizur son of Shedeur
6. Simeon------------------------------------Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai
7. Judah -------------------------------------Nahshon son of Amminadab
8. Issachar-----------------------------------Nethanel son of Zuar
9. Zebulun-----------------------------------Eliabson of Helon
10. Ephraim son of Joseph----------------Elishama son of Ammihud
Manasseh son of Joseph ------------------Gamaliel son of Pedahzur
11. Benjamin--------------------------------Abidan son of Gideoni
12. Dan---------------------------------------Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai
13. Asher-------------------------------------Pagiel son of Ocran
14. Gad---------------------------------------Eliasaph son of Deuel
15. Naphtali---------------------------------Ahira son of Enan

16. These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel."

17. Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders,
18. and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day.
All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one,
19. just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses recorded their names in the wilderness of Sinai.

20-21 This is the number of men twenty years old or older who were able to go to war, as their names were listed in the records of their clans and families:

Tribe Number
Reuben (Jacob's oldest son)-----------------46,500
22-23 Simeon----------------------------------59,300
24-25 Gad--------------------------------------45,650
26-27 Judah------------------------------------74,600
28-29 Issachar---------------------------------54,400
30-31 Zebulun---------------------------------57,400
32-33 Ephraim son of Joseph ---------------40,500
34-35 Manasseh son of Joseph--------------32,200
36-37 Benjamin--------------------------------35,400
38-39 Dan---------------------------------------62,700
40-41 Asher-------------------------------------41,500
42-43 Naphtali---------------------------------53.400

44. These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent.
45. They were registered by families ⏤ all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war.
46. The total number was 603,550.

47. But this total did not include the Levites.
48. For the LORD had said to Moses,
49. "Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites.
50. Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it.
51. Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again.
But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.
52. Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.
53. But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the LORD'S anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle."
54. So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

2.1. Then the LORD gave these instructions to Moses and Aaron:
2. "When the Israelites set up camp, each tribe will be assigned its own area. The tribal divisions will camp beneath their family banners on all four sides of the Tabernacle, but at some distance from it.
3-4. "The divisions of Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun are to camp toward the sunrise on the east side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:

Tribe Leader Number
Judah——-—Nahshon son of Amminadab —— 74,600
5-6 Issachar —Nethanel son of Zuar ————-—54,400
7-8 Zebulun —- Eliab son of Helix ———————57,400

9. So the total of all the troops on Judah's side of the camp is 187,400. These three tribes are to lead the way whenever the Israelites travel to a new campsite.

10-11 "The divisions of Reuben, Simeon, and Gad are to camp on the south side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:

Tribe Leader Number
Reuben———— Elizur son of Shedeur —————46,500
12-13 Simeon — Shelumiel son of Zurishaddah-59,300
14-15 Gad——- Eliasaph son of Deuel ———-—-45,650

16. So the total of all the troops on Reuben's side of the camp is 151,450. These three tribes will be second in line whenever the Israelites travel.

17. "Then the tabernacle, carried by the Levites, will set out from the middle of the camp. All the tribes are to travel in the same order that they camp, each in position under the appropriate family banner.

18-19 "The divisions of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin are to camp on the west side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:

Tribe Leader Number
Ephraim——-- Elishama son of Ammihud ———40,500

20-21 Manasseh—Gamaliel son of Pedahzur—32,200
22-23 Benjamin——- Abidan son of Gideoni—-35,400

24. So the total of all the troops on Ephraim's side of the camp is 108,100. These three tribes will be third in line whenever the Israelites travel.

25-26 "The divisions of Dan, Asher, and Naphtali are to camp on the north side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:

Tribe Leader Number
Dan ————- Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai ——62,700
27-28. Asher ————— Pagiel son of Ocran——-41,500
29-30 Naphtali————- Ahira son of Enan——-53,400

31. So the total of all the troops on Dan's side of the camp is 157,600. These three tribes will be last, marching under their banners whenever the Israelites travel."

32. In summary, the troops of Israel listed by their families totaled 603,550.
33. But as the LORD had commanded, the Levites were not included in this registration.
34. So the people of Israel did everything as the LORD had commanded Moses. Each clan and family set up camp and marched under their banners exactly as the LORD had instructed them.
Numbers 1,2 NLT

Elijah Taken to Heaven

1.

Today's Passage: 1 Kings 2-12

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

The reason the Scripture is before the exercise:
Let us put His Words first!

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

1. When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were traveling form Gilgal.
2. And Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, for the LORD has told me to go to Bethel."

But Elisha replied, "As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!" So they went down together to Bethel.

3. The group of prophets from Bethel came to Elisha and asked him, "Did you know that the LORD Is going to take your master away from you today?"
"Of course I know." Elisha answered. "But be quiet about it."

4. Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, for the LORD has told me to go to Jericho."

But Elisha replied again, "As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you." So they went on together to Jericho.

5. Then the group of prophets from Jericho came to Elisha and asked him, "Did you know that the LORD is going to take your master away from you today?"

"Of course I know," Elisha answered. "But be quiet about it."

6. Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, for the LORD has told me to go to the Jordan River."

But again Elisha replied, "As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live. I will never leave you." So they went on together.

7. Fifty men from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan River.
8. Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground!

9. When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away."

And Elisha replied, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor."

10. "You have asked a difficult thing." Elijah replied. "If you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your request. But if not, then you won't."

11. As they were walking along and talking. suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven.

12. Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel? And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in the distress.
2 Kings 2:1-12 NLT

David Makes Solomon King

1.

Today's Passage: 1 Kings 1:28-53

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

28. King David responded, "Call Bathsheba!" So she came back in and stood before the king.
29. And the king repeated his vow: "As surely as the LORD lives, who has rescued me from every danger,
30. Your son Solomon will be the next king and will sit on my throne this very day, just as I vowed to you before the LORD, the God of Israel."

31. Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground before the king and exclaimed, "May my lord King David live forever!'

32. Then king David ordered, "Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada." When they came into the king's presence,
33. the king said to them, "Take Solomon and my officials down to Gihon Spring. Solomon is to ride on my own mule.
34. There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. Blow the ram's horn and shout, 'Long live King Solomon!'
35. Then escort him back here, and he will sit on my throne. He will succeed me as king, for I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah."

36. "Amen!" Benaiah son of Jehoiada replied. "May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, decree that it happen.
37. And may the LORD be with Solomon as he has been with you, my lord the king, and may he make Solomon's reign even greater than yours.

38. So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the king's bodyguard took Solomon down to Gihon Spring, with Solomon riding on King David's own mule.
39. There Zadok the priest took the flask of olive oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon with the oil. Then they sounded the ram's horn and all the people shouted, "Long live King Solomon!"
40 And all the people followed Solomon into Jerusalem, playing flutes and shouting for joy. The celebration was so joyous and noisy that the earth shook with the sound.

41. Adonijah and his guests heard the celebrating and shouting just as they were finishing their banquet. When Joab heard the sound of the ram's horn he asked, "What's going on? Why is the city in such an uproar?"

42. And while he was still speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. "Come in," Adonijah said to him, "for you are a good man. You must have good news."

43. "Not at all!" Jonathan replied. "Our lord King David has just declared Solomon king!
44. The king sent him down to Gihon Spring with Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, protected by the king's bodyguard. They had him ride on the king's own mule,
45. and Zadok and Nathan have anointed him at Gihon Spring as the new king. They have just returned, and the whole city is celebrating and rejoicing. That's what all the noise is about.
46. What's more, Solomon is now sitting on the royal throne as king.
47. And all the royal officials have gone to King David and congratulated him, saying, 'May your God make Solomon's reign be even greater than yours!" Then the king bowed his head in worship as he lay in his bed,
48. and he said, 'Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who today has chosen a successor to sit on my throne while I am still alive to see it.' "

49. Then all of Adonijah's guests jumped up in panic from the banquet table and quickly scattered.
50. Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, so he rushed to the sacred tent and grabbed onto the horns of the altar,
51. Word soon reached Solomon that Adonijah had seized the horns of the altar in fear, and that he was pleading, "Let King Solomon swear today that he will not kill me!"

52. Solomon replied, "If he proves himself to be loyal, not a hair on his head will be touched. But if he makes trouble, he will die."
53. So King Solomon summoned Adonijah, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed respectfully before King Solomon, who dismissed him, saying, "Go on home."
1 Kings 1:28-53 NLT

15th strategy.
Imagine

  • Prepare your heart - that means ask Him to open you to be able to listen well.
  • Ask Jesus to bring you into the very presence of God Himself as you read instructions
  • Imagine the characters in this passage.
  • Are they facing a large enemy? or a challenge?
  • Have they followed God? or have they fled from His guidance?
  • Are they trusting God?
  • Are they experiencing pain, or loss?
  • Imagine them as friends.
  • What would you do if you were there beside them?
  • Would you be willing to encourage them?
  • What would you do if you were experiencing their story?
  • Who would you turn to for guidance? God? A mentor? Satan?
  • Ask God to show you how to lean on Him in times of attack, or challenge.
  • Thank God for His presence with you right now.

Adonijah Claims the Throne

1

Today's Passage: 1 Kings 1:5-27

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

5. About that time David's son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, "I will make myself king." So he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him.
6. Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, "Why are you doing that?
Adonijah had been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome.

7 Adonijah took Joab son of Zeruiah and Abiathar the priest into his confidence, and they agreed to help him become king.
8. But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David's personal body guard refused to support Adonijah.

9. Adonijah went to the Stone of Zoheleth near the spring of En-rogel, where he sacrificed sheep, cattle, and fattened calves. He invited all his brothers ⏤the other sons of King David ⏤ and all the royal officials of Judah.
10. But he did not invite Nathan the prophet of Benaiah or the king's bodyguard or his brother Solomon.

11. Then Nathan went to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, and asked her, "Haven't you heard that Haggith's son, Adonijah, his made himself king, and our lord David doesn't even know about it?
12. If you want to save your own life and the life of your son Solomon, follow my advice,
13. Go at once to King David and say to him, 'My lord the king, didn't you make a vow and say to me, "Your son Solomon will surely be the next king and will sit on my throne?'"
Why then has Adonijah become king?'
14. And while you are still talking with him, I will come and confirm everything you have said."

15. So Bathsheba went into the king's bedroom. (He was very old now, and Abishag was taking care of him."
16. Bathsheba bowed down before the king.

"What can I do for you?" he asked her.

17. She replied, "My lord, you made a vow before the LORD your God when you said to me, 'Your son Solomon will surely be the next king and will sit on my throne'
18. But instead, Adonijah has made himself king, and my lord the king does not even know about it.
19. He has sacrificed many cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and he has invited all the king's sons to attend the celebration. He also invited Abiathar the priest and Joab, the commander of the army. But he did not invite your servant Solomon.
20. And now, my lord the king, all Israel is waiting for you to announce who will become king after you.
21. If you do not act, my son Solomon and I will be treated as criminals as soon as my lord the king has died."

22. While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived.
23. The king's officials told him, "Nathan the prophet is here to see you."
Nathan went in and bowed before the king with his face to the ground.
24. "Nathan asked, "My lord the king have you decided that Adonijah will be the next king and that he will sit on your throne?
25. Today he has sacrificed many cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and he has invited all the king's sons to attend the celebration. He also invited the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. They are feasting and drinking with him and shouting, 'Long live King Adonijah!'
26. But he did not invite me or Zadok the priest of Benaiah or your servant Solomon.
22. Has my lord the king really done this without letting any of his officials know who should be the next king?"
1 Kings 1:5-27 NLT
