738. Samuel Warns Against a Kingdom — 1 Samuel 8:10-22

Warning Concerning a King

1.

Today's Passage: 1 Samuel 8:10-22

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

3.

29th Strategy.
Called to Evaluate Our Choices

  • Enter your time with the LORD in prayer.
  • Read the entire passage.
  • Does the passage call for an evaluation of choices made? If so, stop and re-read that section one time.
  • Continue through the entire passage.
  • After reading the passage through one time, go back and re-read the section calling for an evaluation.
  • Would the choices you are facing in your life today be similar to the choices in the passage.
  • Write them down on a sticky note, or underline them in your bible.
  • Whatever you are being prompted to evaluate, write it down. (This will be a great source of strength for years to come.)
  • Take these choices to the LORD. Ask Him to give you clarity on how to move forward.
  • Tell Him you desire to make wise choices and you know you need His guidance.
  • Ask God to broaden your vision for the passage.
  • Thank Him for His guidance and praise Him for His words.
  • (I encourage you to write down what God shows you.)

10. So Samuel passed on the LORD'S warning to the people who were asking him for a king.
11. "This is how a king will reign over you," Samuel said. "The king will draft your sons and assign them to his chariots and his charioteers, making them run before his chariots.
12. Some will be generals and captains in his army, some will be forced to plow in his fields and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and chariot equipment.
13. The king will take your daughters from you and force them to cook and bake and make perfumes for him.
14. He will take away the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his own officials.
15. He will take a tenth of your grain and your grape harvest and distribute it among his officers and attendants.
16. He will take your male and female slaves and demand the finest of your cattle and donkeys for his own use.
17. He will demand a tenth of your flocks, and you will be his slaves.
18. When that day comes, you will beg for relief from this king you are demanding, but then the LORD will not help you."

19. But the people refused to listen to Samuel's warning. "Even so, we still want a king," they said.
20. We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle."

21. So Samuel repeated to the LORD what the people had said,
22. and the LORD replied, "Do as they say, and give them a king." Then Samuel agreed and sent the people home.
1 Samuel 8:10-22 NLT

Israel Demands a King

3.

23rd Strategy.

God uses characters and jobs to prepare our hearts for truth.

  • Ask God to open your heart.
  • Thank God for writing this story to teach you.
  • Ask him to help you hear what He wants you to learn.
  • Think about the story line (plot).
  • Are there details being explained? Names being used?
  • Take a moment to think about the activity in the story.
  • Why is God revealing these details? Are they helpful?
  • Thank God for questions to ask yourself.
  • Thank God for answers when they come.

1. As Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons to be judges over Israel.
2. Joel and Abijah, his oldest sons, held court in Beersheba.
3. But they were not like their father for they were greedy for money. They accepted bribes and perverted justice.

4. Finally, all the elders of Israel met at Ramah to discuss the matter with Samuel.
5. "Look," they told him, "you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have."

6. Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the LORD for guidance.
"Do everything they say to you," the LORD replied, "for it is me they are rejecting, not you. They don't want me to be their king any longer.
8. Ever since I brought them from Egypt they have continually abandoned me and followed other gods. And now they are giving you the same treatment.
9. Do as they ask, but solemnly warn them about the way a king will reign over them."
1 Samuel 8:1-9 NLT

736. Judgment against Israel's Leaders — Micah 3:1-12

Judgment against Israel's Leaders

1.

Today's Passage: Micah 3:1-12

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

3.

20th Strategy.
And What Do I Do With That?

  • Open your heart in prayer.
  • Ask God to give you wisdom from His Scripture.
  • Read the passage.
  • Re-read the passage.
  • Are there hard realities addressed in the passage?
  • Ask God to give you the ability to see people through His eyes.
  • Ask God to give you the ability to love people as He loves them.
  • Give God the permission to change your mind, your heart, and your words.
  • Realize that no matter where you stand, you are being molded.
  • Bring your heart back to the Father and pray for those you love.
  • Remember to thank God for His answers.

1. I said, "Listen you leaders of Israel! You are supposed to know right from wrong,
2. but you are the very ones who hate good and love evil. You skin my people alive and tear the flesh from their bones.
3. Yes, you eat my people's flesh, strip off their skin, and break their bones. You chop them up like meat for the cooking pot.
4. Then you beg the LORD for help in times of trouble! Do you really expect him to answer?
After all the evil you have done, he won't even look at you!"

5. This is what the LORD says: "You false prophets are leading my people astray! You promise peace for those who give you food, but you declare war on those who refuse to feed you.
6. Now the night will close around you, cutting off all your visions. Darkness will cover you, putting an end to your predictions and your day will come to an end.
7. Then you seers will be put to shame, and you fortune-tellers will be disgraced. And you will cover your faces because there is no answer from God."

8. But as for me, I am filled with power — with the Spirit of the LORD. I am filled with justice and strength to boldly declare Israel's sin and rebellion.
9. Listen to me, you leaders of Israel! You hate justice and twist all that is right.
10. You are building Jerusalem on a foundation of murder and corruption.
11. You rulers make decisions based on bribes; you priests teach God's laws only for a price; you prophets won't prophesy unless you are paid. Yet all of you claim to depend on the LORD. "No harm can come to us," you say, "for the LORD is here among us."
12. Because of you, Mount Zion will be plowed like an open field; Jerusalem will be reduced to ruins! A thicket will grow on the heights where the Temple now stands.
Micah 3:1-12 NLT

3.

19th strategy.
Asking Questions about the Passage
and
Allowing this Passage to Change My Life.

  • Ask God to join you in your thoughtful questioning.
  • A message from the LORD from He Himself, or through a person or prophet.
  • Who is sending the message and to whom?
  • Why?
  • When?
  • What will happen?
  • How will this effect the people involved?
  • How does this prophecy/message effect/affect me?
  • What does this prophecy/message prove about who God is?
  • Think about the protection of God for His people.
  • Think about the protection of God for you.
  • Pray. Don't forget to thank God for His revelations that might come later. But trust that they will come.

1. This letter is from Paul chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes.

2. I am writing to God's church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.

3. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

4. I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus.
5. Through him, God has enriched your church in every way — with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge.
6. This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true.
7. Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
8. He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day  when our Lord Jesus Christ returns.
9. God will do this, for he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

10. I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thoughts and purpose.
11. For some members of Chloe's household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters.
12. Some of you are saying, "I am a follower of Paul." Others are saying, "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Peter," or "I follow only Christ."

13. Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not!
14. I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,
15. for now no one can say they were baptized in my name.
16. (Oh yes, I also baptized the household of Stephannas, but I don't remember baptizing anyone else."
17. For Christ didn't send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News — and not with clever speech, for fear that the cross of Christ would lose its power.
1 Corinthians 1:1-17 NLT

3.

13th strategy.
Foreshadowing, Promises, and/or Fulfillment of Promises

  • Stop and pray.
  • Ask God to open your heart to hear what He is calling you to take away from your time together this day.
  • Take the time to reread this passage one time.
  • Can you find any foreshadowing of days to come?
  • Can you find any applications in your own life from the historical acts in this passage?
  • Can you find a charge given by God to honor certain happenings?
  • ... a promise made by God?
  • ...a promise fulfilled by God?
  • Meditate on one of these. Write it down in your journal for later reflection.
  • Thank God for His presence in your life right this moment.

1. When I looked again, I saw a man with a measuring line in his hand.
2. "Where are you going? I asked.

He replied, "I am going to measure Jerusalem, to see how wide and how long it is"

3. Then the angel who was with me went to meet a second angel who was coming toward him.
4. The other angel said, "Hurry, and say to that young man, 'Jerusalem will someday be so full of people and livestock that there won't be room enough for everyone! Many will live outside the city walls.
5. Then I, for myself, will be a protective wall of fire around Jerusalem, says the LORD, And I will be the glory inside the city!'"

6. The LORD says, "Come away! Flee from Babylon in the land of the north, for I have scattered you to the four winds.
7. Come away, people of Zion, you who are exiled in Babylon!"

8. After a period of glory, the LORD of Heaven's Armies sent me against the nations who plundered you. For he said, "Anyone who harms you harms my most precious possession.
9. I will raise my fist to crush them, and their own slaves will plunder them." Then you will know that the LORD of Heaven's Armies has sent me.

10. The LORD says, "Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you.
11. Many nations will join themselves to the LORD on that day, and they, too, will be my people. I will live among you , and you will know that the LORD of Heaven's Armies sent me to you.
12. The land of Judah will be the LORD's special possession in the holy land, and he will once again choose Jerusalem to be his own city.
13. Be silent before the LORD, all humanity, for he is springing into action from his holy dwelling."
Zechariah 2:1-13 NLT

3.

5th strategy.
A simple strategy: Building Blocks

  • Begin by asking God to join you in building into your heart what He would want you to build.
  • Read the passage completely
  • Read the passage again. With the second reading pause after each phrase/sentence and think about the phrase/sentence. Take the phrase/sentence in slowly.
  • You might want to reread the phrase/sentence until the meaning, or importance of the phrase/sentence really sinks in.
  • After reading each phrase/sentence at least once, sometimes more. Go back and reread the entire passage.
  • Do you find that the passage builds phrase/sentence upon phrase/sentence in importance? Why? or Why not?
  • What phrase/sentence do you find most important in the passage?
  • Thank God for this phrase/sentence and commit it to memory today.
  • Don't forget to thank God for being here today with you.

18. Then I looked up and saw four animal horns.
19. "What are these?" I asked the angel who was talking with me.

He replied, "These horns represent the nations that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem."

20. Then the LORD showed me four blacksmiths.
21. "What are these men coming to do?" I asked.

The angel replied, "These four horns — these nations – scattered and humbled Judah. Now these blacksmiths have come to terrify those nations and throw them down and destroy them."

3.

14th strategy.
Instructions Given

  • Prepare your heart
  • Ask Jesus to bring you into the very presence of God Himself as you read instructions
  • Imagine God or Jesus handing these instructions.
  • Who are the instructions given to? a group, a nation, a particular person?
  • Why is He giving these instructions?
  • Is there a consequence from these instructions either good or bad?
  • Contemplate these instructions.
  • List them either mentally or write them down.
  • What do they mean? What do they represent?
  • Are these instructions wise for anyone anytime to follow?
  • Would they help your own life, if applied?
  • Pray over what God has given.
  • Thank Him for His guidance either in the past, or presently.

21. Meanwhile, Rehoboam son of Solomon was king in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from among all the tribes of Israel as the place to honor his name. Rehoboam's mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman.

22. During Rehoboam's reign, the people of Judah did what was evil in the LORD'S sight, provoking his anger with their sin, for it was even worse than that of their ancestors
23. For they also built for themselves pagan shrines and set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.
24. There were even male and female shrine prostitutes throughout the land. The people imitated the detestable practices of the pagan nations the LORD had driven from the land ahead of the Israelites.

25. in the fifth year of King Rehoboam's reign, King Shishak of Egypt came up and attacked Jerusalem.
26. He ransacked the treasuries of the LORD'S Temple and the royal palace; he stole everything, including all the gold shields Solomon had made.
27. King Rehoboam later replaced them with bronze shields as substitutes, and he entrusted them to the care of the commanders of the guard who protected the entrance to the royal palace.
28. Whenever the king went to the Temple of the LORD, the guards would also take the shields and then return them to the guardroom.

29. The rest of the events in Rehoboam's reign and everything he did are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Judah.
30. There was constant war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.
31. When Rehoboam died, he was buried among his ancestors in the City of David. His mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman Then his son Abijam became the next king.
1 Kings 14:21-31 NLT

Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

3.

6th strategy.
Cause and Effect

  • Begin by inviting God to show you what is the cause and effect hidden in these verses. Ask Him to show you nuggets of wisdom.
  • Read the passage completely.
  • Divide a piece of paper into two columns.
  • Title the first column Cause and the second column Effect
  • Reread the passage. This time ask if there are any instructions that are given that have a direct end result.
  • Write down the causes (in Cause column)and the effects (in the Effects column).
  • Do you find a pattern?
  • What are your thoughts?
  • Now as you wrap all these thoughts up in your mind. Stop and thank God for being with you this very day.

1. At that time Jeroboam's son Abijah became very sick.
2. So Jeroboam told his wife, "Disguise yourself so that no one will recognize you as my wife. Then go to the prophet Ahijah at Shiloh — the man who told me I would become king.
3. Take him a gift of ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and ask him what will happen to the boy."

4. So Jeroboam's wife went to Ahijah's home at Shiloh. He was an old man now and could no longer see.
5 But the LORD had told Ahijah, "Jeroboam's wife will come here, pretending to be someone else. She will ask you about her son, for he is very sick. Give her the answer I give you."

6. So when Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door, he called out, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you pretending to be someone else?" Then he told her, "I have bad news for you.
7. Give your husband, Jeroboam, this message from the LORD, the God of Israel: 'I promoted you from the ranks of the common people and made you ruler over my people Israel.
8. I ripped the kingdom away from the family of David and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servant David, who obeyed my commands and followed me with all his heart and always did whatever I wanted.
9. You have done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made other gods for yourself and have made me furious and your gold calves. And since you have turned your back on me,
10. I will bring disaster on your dynasty and will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel. I will burn up your royal dynasty as one burns up trash until it is all gone.
11. The members of Jeroboam's family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures. I, the LORD, have spoken.' "

12. Then Ahijah said to Jeroboam's wife, "Go on home, and when you enter the city, the child will die.
13. All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only member of your family who will have a proper burial, for this child is the only good thing that the LORD, the God of Israel, sees in the entire family of Jeroboam.

14 "In addition, the LORD will raise up a king over Israel who will destroy the family of Jeroboam. This will happen today, even now!
15. Then the LORD will shake Israel like a reed whipped about in a stream. He will uproot the people of Israel from this good land that he gave their ancestors and will scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, for they have angered the LORD with the Asherah poles they have set up for worship.
16. He will abandon Israel because Jeroboam sinned and made Israel sin along with him."

17. So Jeroboam's wife returned to Tirzah, and the child died just as she walked through the door of her home.
18. And all Israel buried him and mourned for him, as the LORD had promised through the prophet Ahijah.

19. The rest of the events in Jeroboam's reign, including all his wars and how he ruled, are recorded in the Book of the History of the Kings of Israel.
20. Jeroboam reigned in Israel twenty-two years. When Jeroboam died, his son Nadab became the next king.
1 King 14:1-20 NLT

3.

30th Strategy.
Are Miracles Involved?

  • Enter your time with the LORD in prayer.
  • Read the entire passage.
  • If there is a miracle in the passage, stop and re-read it.
  • Continue through the entire passage.
  • After reading the passage through one time, go back and find  part describing the miracle in the passage.
  • Read two verses or more before the miracle of the passage.
  • Read two verses or more after the miracle of the passage.
  • In re-reading the verses surrounding the miracle of the passage, did you find a conflict occurring because of the miracle?
  • If you did, write down the conflict. What brings this conflict up. Is it due to people? People in power? People in darkness? People in anger? Ask God to allow you to ponder the reasons given for the conflict.
  • If you did not find conflict, ask yourself if you yourself would have been convinced by the miracle.
  • Do you see miracles and pass them by?
  • Ask God to broaden your vision for the miracles in your world.

45. Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he sent the people home.
46. After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray.

47. Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land.
48. He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o'clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them,
49. but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost.
50. They were all terrified when they saw him.

But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don't be afraid," he said. "Take courage! I am here!"
51. Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed,
52. for they still didn't understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.

53. After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. They brought the boat to shore
54. and climbed out. The people recognized Jesus at once,
55. and they ran throughout the whole area, carrying sick people on mats to wherever they heard he was.
5. Wherever he went — in villages, cities, or the countryside — they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.
Mark 6:45-56

  • Thank Him for His guidance and praise Him for His words.

30. The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught.
31. Then Jesus said,
"Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile." He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat.

32. So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone.
33. But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them.

34. Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

35. Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late.
36. Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat."

37. But Jesus said, "You feed them."
"With what?" they asked. "We'd have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!"

38. 'How much bread do you have?" he asked. "Go and find out."

They came back and reported "We have five loaves of bread and two fish."

39. Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people to sit down in groups on the green grass.
40. So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred.

41. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share.
42. They all ate as much as they wanted,
43. and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish.
44. A total of 5,000 men and their families were fed from those loaves.
