959. Jesus the Light of the World 1. Today's Passage: John 8:12-20 Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend. Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here. You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages. Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the New Living Testament (NLT). 2. Thank You for meeting me, LORD. I welcome you into this place. Please prepare my heart Jehovah. Thank you for insight. 3. 1st strategy From the Ancients - Lectio Divina
12. Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." 13. The Pharisees replied, "You are making those claims about yourself! Such testimony is not valid." 14. Jesus told them, "These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don't know this about me. 15. You judge me by human standards, but I do not judge anyone. 16. And if I did, my judgment would be correct in every respect because I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me. 17. Your own law says that if two people agree about something, their witness is accepted as fact. 18. I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other." 19. "Where is your father?" they asked. Jesus answered, "Since you don't know who I am, you don't know who my Father is. If you knew me, you would also know my father." 20. Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. But he was not arrested, because his time had not yet come. John 8:12-20 NLT 4. Thank You for meeting me, LORD. I welcome you into this place. Please prepare my heart Jehovah. Thank you for insight. 3. 3rd strategy For Familiar Passages. Read Anew! Read the passage from Last to First! Sometimes we have read a passage of Scripture so many times we can't see it with new eyes. How can we change the passage without changing the meaning? What would we see if we take a passage and begin with the last verse and read the verses from for example: Chapter 3:10-1.
1. Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2. but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3. As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4. "Teacher," they said to Jesus, "this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?" 6. They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, "All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone! 8. Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9. When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10. Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, "Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?" 11. "No Lord," she said. And Jesus siad, "Neither do I. Go and sin no more." John 8:1-11 NLT 4. Thank you for coming today. Please leave your initials and a comment. Don't forget to check the box underneath your comment, so replies will be directed to you. 27. This is the account of Terah's family. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran: and Haran was the father of Lot. 28. But Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, the land of his birth, while his father, Terah, was still living. 29. Meanwhile, Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah. (Milcah and her sister Iscah were daughters of Nahor's brother Haran.) 30. But Sarai was unable to become pregnant and had no children. 31. One day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram's wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Haran's child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there. 32. Terah lived for 205 years and died while still in Haran. Genesis 11:27-32 NLT 4. Thank you for coming today. 1. At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words. 2. As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there. 3. They began saying to each other, "Let's make bricks and harden them with fire." (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) 4. Then they said, "Come, let's build a great city for ourselves and a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world." 5. But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6. "Look!" he said. "The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! 7. Come, let's go down and confuse the people with different languages. They they won't be able to understand each other." 8. In that way, the LORD scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. 9. That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the LORD confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world. Genesis 11:1-9 NLT 4. I was reminded how disappointed I am that I am not as healed as I thought I would be by now. I spent the day, questioning many things. I felt a little like a child sucking her thumb and holding her blankie... LOL! But as God moved inside me and reminded me - I am weak but He is strong, I woke this morning with an encouraging email from one of you and my reality: Nothing I am doing can be claimed as my own. It is only by His grace that I have the strength of body and mind to continue through this adventure He has laid before me. Please forgive me. I hope it never happens again. One thing I know - even though my earthly garden is filled with weeds in this season of recovery, my heavenly garden is being plucked daily. (that is what I told one of our members that emailed - and it is so true)!!!! May God bless your day today! 950. Noah's Sons 1. Today's Passage: Genesis 9:18-29 Get to know your bible. 18. The sons of Noah who came out of the boat with their father were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham is the father of Canaan.) 19. From these three sons of Noah came all the people who now populate the earth. 20. After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard. 21. One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent. 22. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers. 23. Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked. 24. When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son had done. 25. Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham: "May Canaan be cursed! My he be the lowest of servants to his relatives." 26. Then Noah said, "May the LORD, the God of Shem, be blessed, and may Canaan be his servant! 27. May God expand the territory of Japheth! May Japheth share the prosperity of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant." 28. Noah lived another 350 years after the great flood. 29. He lived 950 years, and then he died. Genesis 9:18-29 NLT 4. They give us a better understanding of what God is saying in His word. Through that better understanding we begin to think differently, and our attitudes and lives change. Even our actions toward ourselves, others and the world change to be more Christlike. And isn't that what Christians desire? To be Christ like. To be Christ followers. To know God. 1. This is the account of the families of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the three sons of Noah. Many children were born to them after the great flood. 4. Thank you for coming today.
