Nehemiah's Grief for the Exiles

1.

Today's Passage: Nehemiah 1

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.
Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

These are the memoirs of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. In late autumn, in the month of Kislev, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes' reign, I was at the fortress of Susa.
1. Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had returned there from captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem.

3. They said to me, "Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire."

4. When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven.
5. Then I said,
"O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love him and obey his commands,
6. listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess that we have sinned against you.
7. We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses.

8. "Please remember what you told your servant Moses:  'If you are unfaithful to me, I will scatter you among the nations.
9. But if you return to me and obey my commands and live by them, then even if you are exiled to the ends of the earth, I will bring you back to the place I have chosen for my name to be honored.'

10. "The people you rescued by your great power and strong hand are your servants.
11. O LORD, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me."

In those days I was the king's cup-bearer.
Nehemiah 1:1-11

3.

2nd strategy
Meditation in
WORSHIP

  • Begin with asking God to open your heart to what He has for you to hear today.
  • Read a passage of the Scripture
  • Is a miracle in the passage? Is a relationship deepened in some way? Has God stepped in and shown His power,
  • Has he shown His discipline or even His protection or His end goal?
  • Has Jesus, lived life, shown love, or taught?
  • Whatever the passage holds that brings you an awareness of who He is, praise Him for that revelation.
  • Give Him glory and honor and praise. Thank Him for what He has given.
  • Think on these things. Ponder them. Reread the passage. Write about what you read. Pray! This is Worship!
  • Thank God for His presence this moment.

2.
Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

1. O LORD, don't rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage!
2. Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me.
3. Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins.
4. My guilt overwhelms me ⏤ it is burden too heavy to bear.
5. My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins.
6. I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief.
7. A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken.
8. I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.

9. You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh.
10. My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind.
11. My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance.
12. Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery.

13. But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak.
14. I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply.
15. For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O LORD my God.
16. I prayed, "Don't let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall."

17. I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain.
18. But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done.
19. I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason.
20. They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good.
21. Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God.
22. Come quickly to help me, O LORD my savior.
Psalm 38:1-22 NLT

The Land Yet to be Conquered

1.

Today's Passage: Acts 28:17-31

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.
Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

17. Three days after Paul's arrival, he called together the local Jewish leaders. He said to them, "Brothers, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Roman government, even though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors.
18. The Romans tried me and wanted to release me, because they found no cause for the death sentence.
19. But when the Jewish leaders protested the decision, I felt it necessary to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no desire to press charges against my own people.
20. I asked you to come here today so we could get acquainted and so I could explain to you that I am bound with this chain because I believe that the hope of Israel ⏤ the Messiah ⏤ has already come."

21. They replied, "We have had no letters from Judea or reports against you from anyone who has come here.
22. But we want to hear what you believe, for the only thing we know about this movement is that it is denounced everywhere."

23. So a time was set, and on that day a large number of people came to Paul's lodging. He explained and testified about the Kingdom of God and tried to persuade them about Jesus from the Scriptures. Using the law of Moses and the books of the prophets, he spoke to them from morning until evening.
24. Some were persuaded by the things he said, but others did not believe.
25. And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they left with this final word from Paul: "The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet,

26. 'Go and say to this people:
When you hear what I say,
you will not understand.
When you see what I do,
you will not comprehend.
27. For the hearts of these people are hardened,
and their ears cannot hear,
and they have closed their eyes ⏤
so their eyes cannot see,
and their ears cannot hear,
and their hearts cannot understand,
and they cannot turn to me
and let me heal them.'

28. So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it."

30. For the next two years, Paul lived in Rome at his own expense. He welcomed all who visited him,
31. boldly proclaiming the Kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ. And no one tried to stop him.
Acts 28:17-31 NLT

3.

4th strategy.
Is this a who, what, when, where, or how passage?

  • Begin by inviting God into your reading. Ask Him to join you and show you the plot of this passage.
  • Read the passage
  • Ask yourself as you read the passage which is most important in the passage.
    • Is who the passage about the most important thing?
    • Is what the passage is about the most important thing?
    • Is when or where the passage takes place the most important thing?
    • Or is how the passage presented, worked out in time, or motivates the reader the most important thing...?
  • After you decide which is the most important vehicle of the passage, re-read it.
  • Contemplate if this passage could bring you to a fuller understanding of God and His purposes.
  • Thank God for being with you in this endeavor.

11. It was three months after the shipwreck that we set sail on another ship that had wintered at the island ⏤ an Alexandrian ship with the twin gods as its figurehead.
12. Our first stop was Syracuse, where we stayed three days.
13. From there we sailed across to Rhegium. A day later a south wind began blowing, so the following day we sailed up the coast to Puteoli.
14. There we found some believers, who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome.

15. The brothers and sisters in Rome had heard we were coming, and they came to meet us at the Forum on the Appian Way. Others joined us at The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them. he was encouraged and thanked God.

16. When we arrived in Rome, Paul was permitted to have his own private lodging, though he was guarded by a soldier.

Safe at Malta

1.

Today's Passage: Acts 28:1-10

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.
Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

1. Once we were safe on shore, we learned that we were on the island of Malta.
2. The people of the island were very kind to us. It was cold and rainy, so they built a fire on the shore to welcome us.

3. As Paul gathered an armful of sticks and was laying them on the fire, a poisonous snake,  driven out by the heat, bit him on the hand.
4. The people of the island saw it hanging from his hand and said to each other, "A murderer, no doubt! Though he escaped the sea, justice will not permit him to live."
5. But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and as unharmed.
6 The people waited for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw that he wasn't harmed,

7. Near the shore where we landed was an estate belonging to Publius, the chief official of the island. Publius's father was ill with fever and dysentery. Paul went in and prayed for him, and laying his hands on him, he healed him.

8. As it happened, Publius's father was ill with fever and dysentery. Paul went in and prayed for him, and lying his hands on him, he healed him.
9. Then all the other sick people on the island came and were healed.
10. As a result we were showered with honors, and when the time came to sail, people supplied us with everything we would need for the trip.
Acts 28:1-10 NLT

3.

15th strategy.
Imagine

  • Prepare your heart - that means ask Him to open you to be able to listen well.
  • Ask Jesus to bring you into the very presence of God Himself as you read instructions
  • Imagine the characters in this passage.
  • Are they facing a large enemy? or a challenge?
  • Have they followed God? or have they fled from His guidance?
  • Are they trusting God?
  • Are they experiencing pain, or loss?
  • Imagine them as friends.
  • What would you do if you were there beside them?
  • Would you be willing to encourage them?
  • What would you do if you were experiencing their story?
  • Who would you turn to for guidance? God? A mentor? Satan?
  • Ask God to show you how to lean on Him in times of attack, or challenge.
  • Thank God for His presence with you right now.

Think of Excellence

1.

Today's Passage: Philippians 4:1-23

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.
Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

1. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stay true to the Lord. I love you and long to see you, dear friends, for you are my joy and the crown I receive for my work.

2. Now I appeal to Euodia and Syntyche. Please, because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreement.
3. And I ask you my true partner, to help these two women, for they worked hard with me in telling others the Good News. They worked along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are written in the Book of Life.

4. Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again ⏤ rejoice!
5. Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.

6. Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
7. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

8. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
9. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me ⏤ everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

10. How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you  have always been concerned for me, but you didn't have the chance to help me.
11. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.
12. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.
13. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
14. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty.

15. As you know, you Philippians were the only ones who gave me financial help when I first brought you the Good News and then traveled on from Macedonia. No other church did this.
16. Even when I was in Thessalonica you sent help more than once.
17. I dont say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness.

18. At the moment I have all I need  ⏤ and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God.
19. And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

20. Now all glory to God our Father forever and ever! Amen.

21. Give my greetings to each of God's holy people ⏤ all who belong to Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send you their greetings.
22. And all the rest of God's people send you greetings, too, especially those in Caesar's household.

23. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
Philippians 4:1-23 NLT

3.

18th strategy.
Praising and Thanking God.

  • Stop and enter into God's presence by praying.
  • Ask God to open your heart to hear His words to you.
  • Read through the passage.
  • Re-read the passage looking for acts of praise and/or thankfulness.
  • Is your heart drawn to a particular verse.
  • Re-read that verse at least 4 times.
  • Ask God to allow you to reveal to you how to be filled with that kind of experience of praise and/or that gratitude.
  • As you leave the page ask God to remind you of this moment throughout your day.
  • Remember to thank God for His revelation to your heart.

A Psalm of David

Today's Passage: Psalm 144:1-15

Get to know your bible. It will become a good friend.

Or find the passage NASB version on Bible Gateway here.
You can search for other versions there as well. Versions even in foreign languages.

Or, for your convenience I have typed the verses below from the
New Living Testament (NLT).

2.
Thank You for meeting me, LORD.
I welcome you into this place.
Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

1. Praise the LORD who is my rock. He trains my hands for war and gives my fingers skill for battle.
2. He is my loving ally and my fortress, my tower of safety, my rescuer. He is my shield, and I take refuge in him. He makes the nations submit to me.

3. O LORD, what are human beings that you should notice them, mere mortals that you should think about them?
4. For they are like a breath of air; their days are like a passing shadow.

5. Open the heavens, LORD, and come down. Touch the mountains so they billow smoke.
6. Hurl your lightening bolts and scatter your enemies! Shoot your arrows and confuse them!
7. Reach down from heaven and rescue me; rescue me from deep waters, from the power of my enemies.
8. Their mouths are full of lies; they swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead.

9. I will sing a new song to you, O God! I will sing your praises with a ten-stringed harp.
10. For you grant victory to kings! You rescued your servant David from the fatal sword.
11. Save me! Rescue me from the power of my enemies. Their mouths are full of lies; they swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead.
12. May our sons flourish in their youth like well-nurtured plants. May our daughters be like graceful pillars, carved to beautify a palace.
13. May our barns be filled with crops of every kind. May the flocks in our fields multiply by the thousands, even tens of thousands,
14. and may our oxen be loaded down with produce. May there be no enemy breaking through our walls, no going into captivity, no cries of alarm in our town squares.
15. Yes, joyful are those who live like this! Joyful indeed are those whose God is the LORD.
Psalm 144:1-15 NLT

3.

8th strategy.
Choose three important verses that speak to you today.

  • Begin by getting your heart ready to receive the words that God has laid down for us on this page. Ask Him to give you what you need to hear. Ask Him to give you the mind of Christ to be able to remember this strategy and continue it throughout the day.
  • Read the passage completely.
  • After reading the first time go back and chose the three most important verses that speak to you today.
  • Ask God to bring those verses back to you through out the day.
  • Find out if by the end of the day only one verse has been thought about more than the others.
  • Thank God for that verse.
  • This is a good strategy to use for long passages.
  • Be sure to stop and thank God for being here with you today.

44. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

46. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.
47. If you are kind only to your friends how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that.

Please prepare my heart Jehovah.
Thank you for insight.

33. "You have also heard that our ancestors were told, 'You  must not break your vows, you must carry out the vows you make to the LORD.'
But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, 'By heaven!' because heaven is God's throne.
35. And do not say 'By the earth!' because the earth is his footstool. And do not say 'By Jerusalem!' for Jerusalem is the city of the great King.
36. Do not even say, 'By my head!' for you can't turn one hair white or black.
37. Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't' Anything beyond this is from the evil one.

Matthew 5:33-37 NLT

14th strategy.
Instructions Given

  • Prepare your heart
  • Ask Jesus to bring you into the very presence of God Himself as you read instructions
  • Imagine God or Jesus handing these instructions.
  • Who are the instructions given to? a group, a nation, a particular person?
  • Why is He giving these instructions?
  • Is there a consequence from these instructions either good or bad?
  • Contemplate these instructions.
  • List them either mentally or write them down.
  • What do they mean? What do they represent?
  • Are these instructions wise for anyone anytime to follow?
  • Would they help your own life, if applied?
  • Pray over what God has given.
  • Thank Him for His guidance either in the past, or presently.
