3rd strategy
For Familiar Passages.  Read Anew!
Read the passage from Last to First!

​
Sometimes we have read a passage of Scripture so many times we can't see it with new eyes.
How can we change the passage without changing the meaning?
What would we see if we take a passage and begin with the last verse and read the verses from for example:

 Read Chapter 3:10-1. 
  • Begin with asking God to open your heart to allow you to see these verses afresh with new eyes and hear with new ears.
  • Now begin reading Chapter 3 beginning with verse 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
  • Does the passage change in meaning? Does it give you a new insight into it?
  • Finalize with re-reading the passage in the way it was originally written.
  • Look back over the verses. Does any one verse stand out in your heart?
  • Pray over that verse. Place it in our heart, your journal, on a 3X5 card or sticky note. Tape it in your bible, on a mirror, or on your desk.
  • Be sure to thank God for being here with you today. He gets great pleasure from our gratitude.

49. John said to Jesus, "Master, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he isn't in our group."
50. But Jesus said, "Don't stop him! Anyone who is not against you is for you."

Reading... Simple Act of Meditation


  • Begin with asking God to open your heart to what He has for you to hear today.
  • Read a passage of the Scripture
  • Is a miracle in the passage? Is a relationship deepened in some way? Has God stepped in and shown His power, 
  • Has he shown His discipline or even His protection or His end goal? 
  • Has Jesus, lived life, shown love, or taught?
  • Whatever the passage holds that brings you an awareness of who He is, praise Him for that revelation. 
  • Give Him glory and honor and praise. Thank Him for what He has given.
  • Think on these things. Ponder them. Reread the passage. Write about what you read. Pray! This is Worship!
  • Thank God for His presence this moment.

46. Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest.
47. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side.
48. Then he said to them,
"Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me, Whoever is the least among you is the greatest."

11th strategy.
Reading... Simple Act of Meditation

​
  • Take this time to read the passage one time through.
  • Then go back and read every verse separately.
  • After reading one verse just close your eyes and think about the words for a few seconds. When you are no longer considering the sweetness of God's word to you, move to the next verse.
  • Continue through the passage. 
    • Loving HIM is the purpose. 
    • Getting to know HIM is the purpose. 
    • Allowing Him to take the day and use us in this day is the purpose. 
    • Finding the sweetness He desires to impart is the joy.
  • Thank God for coming and bringing his Holy Presence into your day.

43. Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God's power. While everyone was marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples,
44. "Listen to me and remember what I say. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies."
45. But they didn't know what he meant. Its significance was hidden from them, so they couldn't understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

39. An evil spirit keeps seizing him, making him scream. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever leaves him alone.
40. I begged your disciples to cast out the spirit, but they couldn't do it."

41. Jesus said, "You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you and put up with you?" Then he said to the man, "Bring your son here."

42. As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father.
43. Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God's power.

28. About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray.
29. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 
30. Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus.
31. They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem.

32. Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus' glory and two men standing with him.
33. As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, "Master, it's wonderful for us to be here! Let's make three shelters as a memorial — one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.'
34. But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.

35. Then a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, My Chosen One.  Listen to him."
36. When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone. They didn't tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

30th Strategy.
Are Miracles Involved?

​  
  • Enter your time with the LORD in prayer.
  • Read the entire passage.
  • If there is a miracle in the passage, stop and re-read it.
  • Continue through the entire passage.
  • After reading the passage through one time, go back and find the part/parts describing the miracle in the passage.
  • Read two verses or more before the miracle of the passage.
  • Read two verses or more after the miracle of the passage.
  • In re-reading the verses surrounding the miracle of the passage, did you find a conflict occurring because of the miracle?
  • If you did, write down the conflict. What brings this conflict up. Is it due to people? People in power? People in darkness? People in anger? Ask God to allow you to ponder the reasons given for the conflict.
  • If you did not find conflict, ask yourself if you yourself would have been convinced by the miracle.
  • Do you see miracles and pass them by?
  • Ask God to broaden your vision for the miracles in your world.
  • Thank Him for His guidance and praise Him for His words.

21. Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone who he was.

23. Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
24. If you try to hang on to your life , you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.
25. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?
26. If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and angels.
27. I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God."

From the Ancients - Lectio Divina
  • Ask God to open your heart and mind to what is written in the passage.
  • Read the passage
  • Re-read the passage looking for 3 words or phrases that really resonate in your heart.
  • Write those words down.
  • Re-read the passage. Of the 3 words which 1 resonates most in your heart? 
    • Ask yourself what does this word mean in my life?
    • Where do I need change/growth/revelation?
  • Write this word down. Or, remember this word throughout your day.
  • Ask God to show you meaning from the passage.
  • We read, reflect, and communicate. Share with the community.
  • Don't forget to thank God for being with you during this endeavor to find intimacy with Him.

Imagine

  • Prepare your heart - that means ask Him to open you to be able to listen well.
  • Ask Jesus to bring you into the very presence of God Himself as you read instructions
  • Imagine the characters in this passage.
  • Are they facing a large enemy? or a challenge? 
  • Have they followed God? or have they fled from His guidance?
  • Are they trusting God?
  • Are they experiencing pain, or loss?
  • Imagine them as friends.
  • What would you do if you were there beside them?
  • Would you be willing to encourage them?
  • What would you do if you were experiencing their story?
  • Who would you turn to for guidance? God? A mentor? Satan?
  • Ask God to show you how to lean on Him in times of attack, or challenge.
  • Thank God for His presence with you right now.

10. When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then he slipped quietly away with them toward the town of Bethsaida.
11. But the crowds found out where he was going, and they followed him. He welcomed them and taught them about he Kingdom of God, and he healed those who were sick.

12. Late in the afternoon the twelve disciples came to him and said, "Send the crowds away to the nearby villages and farms, so they can find food and lodging for the night. There is nothing to eat here in this remote place."
13. But Jesus said,
"You feed them."
"But we have only five loaves of bread and two fishes," they answered. "Or are you expecting us to go ad buy enough food for this whole crowd?"
14. For there were about 5,000 men there.

Jesus replied, "Tell them to sit down in groups of about fifty each."
15. So the people all sat down.
16.Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people.
17. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afteward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of lefovers!

7. When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead. 
8. Others thought Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets risen from the dead.
9. "I beheaded John," Herod said, "so who is this man about whom I hear such stories?" And he kept trying to see him.
